Happy Christmas

E-mail Print PDF

I'd just like to wish a Happy Christmas to everyone in the Adult Novice (and extended) Novice Squad, and wish you all well with your rowing in 2009. Particularly to those just beginning to row because winter is rather a hard time and it can be a bit frustrating when there is not enough water time for your skill to develop and everyone else seems to be better than you. As for all the others in the group it must be quite satisfying to see how you have improved over the last year or so. No longer are you treated as learners but are quite respected for how quickly you have picked up the skill of rowing and in some cases equalled or bettered those of us who have rowed for many years - and still think we are the best! I'd also like to thank Jon, Rachel, Steve, Roy and David on your behalf for coaching you in their own time. Hang on everyone, Spring is on its way !

Head of the River report - Molesey VII

E-mail Print PDF

Sunshine, warm temperatures and a mirror-like Thames welcomed the eulogilistically named Supra-Novices to HORR 2008.

The largely inexperienced crew of (from bow to stroke) John Thompson, Ian Bott, John Bruton, Alex Heally, Nick Hallwood, Jonathon Cotterill, Mike Trotman and John Parker, coxed by Joel Bruton, showed several late changes from the original selection, leaving only a one night “practice-run” to perfect their teamwork, two days before the race.

A further late change of boat, necessitating last-minute changes to rigger settings, could have given further support to any “God is against us” brigade, but certainly not this crew who took everything in their stride with a shrug and a smile.

However, despite the aforementioned problems, the crew performed faultlessly to record a final position of 392 (from 410 starters) in around 22 minutes, almost certainly substantiating the somewhat excessive alcohol consumption at The Albion later.

Special thanks to all concerned, particularly Ted, Rachel and David for all their coaching efforts.
