GB Eight "Bring on Round Two"

E-mail Print PDF

The Eight (which included two Molesey boys in the shape of myself and Tom Solesbury) had a mixed regatta at the recent Munich World Cup.  We got the best result of the Olympiad so far in bringing home the silver medal, but we were all actually very disappointed with that.

Going into the regatta we knew that without the Americans (reigning Olympic champions) and the Canadians (reigning World Champions) it wasn't a full-strength field, but there was still plenty of competition to test ourselves against for the first race of the season.  The Germans who just pipped us into second place at the World Championships were there, and racing on home water; the Chinese showed real speed in places last summer and are building now for their home Olympic Games; and the Aussies are back, with the legendary Jimmy Tomkins (three-times Olympic gold medalist and the only rower ever to be World Champion in every sweep-oared event: 2+, 2-, 4+, 4-, 8+) in the six-seat, and two new guys as their stern pair for this year, both returning Olympians from Athens '04.

World Cup Success for Molesey Rowers

E-mail Print PDF

GB Rowing LogoMolesey athletes performed superbly Sunday in the final of the first World Cup in Munich.  Andy Hodge led the four to a convincing and dominant win on their first step to Beijing Gold.  Acer Nethercott, Tom Solesbury rowed well to claim silver in the men’s eight which also was a great start to their international season. Well done also to John West in coaching the men’s eight.  Next stop is Lucerne in 2 weeks time when hopefully we will see similar results and also Tom James getting his chance in the four after an injury preventing him rowing the first world cup and Ollie Moore rowing in the pair.  Great work guys

Success at Wallingford Regatta

E-mail Print PDF

Molesey athletes attacked the first regatta of the season with style last weekend @ Wallingford.  MBC claimed 4 wins in Senior Men’s events which was a great start to the season and promises much for the months ahead.  Special mention must go to the “athletes formerly known as Giants” for claiming their first win in their first regatta and losing their novice status. These athletes didn’t even compete in Novice for their first race!  This is a fantastic effort by this group who first started rowing in October last year and beat crews who were placed much higher in the head races.  Well done boys!

Wins –
Men’s Elite Coxless Four – Greg Searle, Mo Sbihi, Dan Ritchie, Jonny Searle.
Men’s Elite Quad Scull – Pete Wells, Greg Searle, Jonny Searle, James Stevenson
Men’s S1 Coxless Four – Ben Curtis, Scott Rennie, Dan Badr, Richard Ockendon
Men’s S4 Eight – Nick Fitzgerald, Teddy Groves, Frazer Anthony-John, Frazer Brent, Jonnie Miller, Tom Colyer, Simon Jones, Jake Lee-Watson, Andrew James (cox)

Molesey Taking Over!!!

E-mail Print PDF

As you know 5 Molesey oarsmen were selected this week in Olympic class boats for the first World Cup in Munich.

For me it has been a bumpy ride on the way to selection for the eight. I had a really good camp in Varese but unfortunately picked up a bug on the way back to the UK and spent the next 5 days in bed. With the pair from last year’s World Championships coming into the eight’s group everything was still up in the air so my timing couldn’t have been worse. When I finally got back to training I only managed two days before developing some painful tendonitis in my forearm. A steroid injection forced me to miss more training and by this time I was nearly pulling my hair out!
